Do Cruise Ships Have Air Conditioning Systems? (The basics)

All modern cruise ships have air conditioning. The air temperature onboard is generally held at a relatively stable temperature (between 18 – 20°C (64 – 68°F)) regardless of where in the world the cruise is.

You're finally taking the plunge and going on a cruise! But you have one burning question on your mind: do cruise ships have air conditioning? Rest assured, all modern cruise ships have air conditioning. Keep reading to learn more about how temperature is regulated onboard and what to expect during your voyage.

Most cruise ships have air conditioning in all public spaces and also in cabins. While the temperature is generally comfortable, you may want to pack a sweater or light jacket for indoor areas such as the theatre or casino, which can be air-conditioned to a cooler temperature.

To keep the air onboard circulating and passengers comfortable, cruises employ what's called an air handling system. This system draws in air from outside, filters and cools it, then distributes it throughout the ship.

How does the air conditioning work on a cruise ship?

Cruise ship air conditioning works much the same way as it does in any other large building. There is a central plant that produces cold water, which is then circulated throughout the ship via a system of pipes. This cold water is used to cool the air in the cabins and public spaces.

The temperature onboard is regulated by an individual thermostat in each cabin, so passengers can control their own temperature per cabin. In most cases, the default setting on these thermostats is set to keep things cool but not too cold. However, if you find yourself feeling too warm, you can adjust the thermostat accordingly.

  1. 100% of fresh Ocean Air is pumped - no reuse of any of the "dirty" air
  2. The fresh ocean air goes through various filtration systems to remove any pathogens
  3. The air is distributed throughout the public spaces of the ship.
  4. The air is distributed individually in each cabins - each cabins is pressurised, so no air from any other cabins or public areas can get into the cabin

What Should I Expect?

In general, you should expect the temperature onboard to be comfortable and relatively consistent throughout the ship. However, keep in mind that indoor areas such as the theatre or casino may be air-conditioned to a cooler temperature. If you're sensitive to temperature changes or tend to get cold easily, we recommend packing a sweater or light jacket.

How is Temperature Regulated Onboard?

All cruiser ships have air conditioning units that regulate the temperature in cabins and public spaces. Most cabins will also have an individually controlled thermostat, so you can adjust the temperature in your own space to your liking. The temperature onboard is generally kept at a relatively stable temperature throughout the voyage (between 18 – 20°C (64 – 68°F), regardless of the vessel's location in the world.

While air conditioning is standard on all cruise ships, some older or smaller vessels may not have air conditioning in all areas. In these cases, fans are usually provided to circulate air and keep guests comfortable.

How cold does it gets in public areas?

Between 18 – 20°C ((64 – 68°F) throughout the ship. Most cruise ships have centrally temperature control air conditioning systems that direct conditioned air to all areas of the ship. The temperature is generally set between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, which is comfortable for most people. However, if you are used to a warmer climate or simply don't enjoy cold air, you can always ask your waiter for a blanket or bring a shawl with you on board.)

Can you control the temperature in your cabin?

Yes, you can control the temperature in your cruise cabin. Most cabins have thermostats that allow you to set the desired temperature. Some cabins also have a balcony door that can be opened to allow the outside air in, which will cool or warm the cabin.

On some cruise lines, if you are in a balcony cabin, the air conditioning system will shut off if you leave the balcony window open. This is to prevent cold air from coming into the cabin.

And if I am cold in my cabin?

If you find yourself cold in your cabin, there are a few things you can do:

  • You can ask your cabin steward for an extra blanket.

  • You can put on extra layers of clothing.

  • Some people find it helpful to drink warm beverages or take a hot shower before going to bed.

Or most people don't realize that the air conditioning in a cabin is adjustable. Many people complain of being too cold on a cruise ship, but they never bother to adjust the thermostat. The truth is, most cruise cabins are too cold because the air conditioning is set on high by default.

If you're having trouble sleeping or if you're feeling chilly, try adjusting the thermostat to a warmer setting. You may be surprised at how much warmer it feels once you raise the temperature just a few degrees.

Has the ventilation system been upgraded since COVID

Yes, the cruise ship ventilation system has been upgraded since COVID. In fact, cruise ships are required to have a state-of-the-art ventilation system to prevent the spread of any type of air-borne illness.

After the upgrade, most cruise lines air handling units are now using 100% of fresh air as a standard practice. This reduces the transmission of any air born disease.

You can be assured that the cruise ships you board are following all the latest health and safety guidelines with the onboard air circulation. So if you're worried about getting sick on your upcoming cruise, rest assured that you'll be well taken care of. Just make sure to pack your sunscreen and shades...the beaches await!

What shall I do if my air conditioning breaks?

If your air conditioning unit breaks, please contact guest services for assistance. They will send a technician to fix the air con as quickly as possible.

If they can not fix it, they will often move you to another cabin, or give you some sort of compensation if the ship is full.
