Where is Marion Island?

Marion Island is in the sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean, about 1,770 kilometers southeast of South Africa. Dutch explorer Maarten de Vos first discovered it in 1663.

This remote island, part of the Prince Edward Islands group, has a compelling history as a base for scientific research and a former whaling station. Marion Island was annexed by South Africa in 1947 and has since been pivotal for biological and geological studies.
